Pastor Jack Hayford made these comments after the election about the lack of influence of the church in America.
... Unless the church becomes more persuaded that the fountainhead of its strength is in living worship—by which we humble ourselves, seeking God's presence (more than it demonstrates our skill at making music)—no degree of programming or growth will be able to regain the place of influence the once-effective voice the church historically has had in the U.S. as "salt," to neutralize the toxic issues existing in the arena of morality, justice and family life.
... Unless the pulpits, sanctuaries and classrooms of the church be once again employed as centerpieces of shaping disciples unto transformation with solid teaching and meaty preaching, holding forth the Word of life, the declining percentage of believers in America will be further reduced. "Church Growth" alone will never be an effective substitute for "people growth"; the formation and equipping of committed followers of Jesus Christ, who bear His Cross and who shine as lights in the world.
1) A call to living worship (not programs or musical expression)
2) A call to make disciples (not a focus on church growth, but on people growth to look and act like Jesus)
Our win is to make disciples NOT to just gather people. Yes, we must gather them, but for the purpose of them following Jesus and of reaching the lost. Jesus said, "Come follow me, and I will make you fishers of men." We are called to Jesus for a purpose. In order to accomplish His purpose, we must lay down our lives in obedience to Him.
Thank you for being on the front lines making disciples,
Jeff and Sara

What do we do first?
The initial stages of trying to start on campus can be daunting... we need to pray a lot and ask the Lord for keys to this campus.
1. Pray
They cannot be a part of something they have not heard of, they will not be a part of something that does have a compelling vision/purpose, and they will probably not come to something if they do not have a personal/relational invite/connection.
2. Understand XA and what you are trying to accomplish/compelling vision
3. Build a Core (need people)
Enclosed are some of my start up thoughts on connecting with students and building the initial core on a campus. (I am looking for my 12 disciples to pour myself into so that they will reproduce what we experienced together) BTW, it is not uncommon to have to rebuild your core in the first 2 years (students who initially look interested may not stick--- painful but normal)
I hope this helps our many groups that are trying to get things going :)
Thoughts on building a core/connecting
Don't get sucked in...
Don't compare yourself to others!
Learn from one another, but don't compare. Every campus, every leader, every situation is unique. Don't become paralyzed by fear or lose the wonder and joy of serving Jesus on a campus... don't compare :)
In faith, engage the campus, establish students in the faith and in the community, equip and empower the students to reach their generation.
Have a faith filled day!
